A family of twenty-four in north-western Nigeria, have died after eating a meal suspected to be poisoned with fertilizer.
The incident happened in Danzanke village – a remote community in the north-west Sokoto state.
The state’s health commissioner, Ali Inname, told journalists that the family mistakenly used a fertilizer chemical that looked like salt in preparing a meal on Monday. He added that medical personnel did all they could to save the victims’ lives but all efforts proved futile.
Meanwhile, two members of the family who only tasted the food are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Following this incident, medical officials have once again issued a word of caution to the general public, asking them to always keep poisonous chemical substances away from their food stores or foodstuffs for safety purposes.
Similar incidents involving families have happened in the past in Nigeria but the number of those who died in this recent case is undeniably high.
