The Nigerian government says it has put labour laws in place to stop the salaries of doctors who started an indefinite strike last week.

The strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which represents about 40 percent of doctors in Africa’s most populous country, started last Monday.

They called for the strike due to pay, insurance benefits, delayed salaries and allowances and poor facilities as the country faces a third wave of coronavirus.

The Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige accused the doctors of playing with people’s lives.
He said it was unfair that they were being paid while on strike, especially during Nigeria’s third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
