Hundreds of Tourists Reportedly Missing as Torrential Floods and Mudslides Devastate Popular Pilgrimage and Trekking Area
At least 95 people have been killed following a massive flash flood and mudslide that struck the Nepal-Tibet border, with hundreds of tourists reportedly still missing.
According to Nepal’s tourism authorities, the missing tourists include more than 100 Indians, 47 Americans and 33 Britons. The affected area is popular among pilgrims and trekkers from around the world.
The disaster has also caused significant destruction along the border, with footage reportedly showing a powerful wall of water and mud sweeping through buildings at a border crossing.
In Tibet, Chinese state media have reported three deaths and 265 people missing as rescue teams continue efforts to locate those affected.
Emergency responders are working in difficult conditions as authorities assess the full extent of the destruction and continue search-and-rescue operations.
The death toll and number of missing people could rise as rescue teams gain access to affected areas.
