NPP Communications Director Slams Mahama Government Over Ken Ofori-Atta Extradition
Accra, Ghana – Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sharply criticised the Mahama administration for what he described as incompetence in handling the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Ahiagbah argued that instead of formally pursuing legal channels to bring Ofori-Atta back to Ghana to face corruption charges, the government is appealing to the NPP to produce the former minister. He insisted the administration must enforce the law without resorting to political drama.
“The government must enforce the law to bring Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana. It has a case for him to answer,” Ahiagbah stated in a strongly worded post. He pointed out that the NPP had successfully used legal processes to extradite Madam Sedinam Tamakloe-Attionu, a former MASLOC CEO convicted of corruption, setting a clear precedent.
Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister under the previous NPP government, faces multiple counts of corruption and causing financial loss to the state. Ghana has initiated extradition proceedings from the United States, where he has reportedly secured residency status, complicating efforts. The Office of the Special Prosecutor continues to pursue the case.
The NPP official maintained that his party bears no responsibility for producing Ofori-Atta, urging the current government to follow due process as done in the Tamakloe case, which culminated in her recent extradition and return to serve a 10-year sentence.
Ahiagbah’s comments underscore deepening partisan tensions in Ghana as the Mahama administration pushes its anti-corruption agenda against high-profile figures from the previous regime. Political observers expect the extradition battle to remain a major flashpoint in the coming months.
