Joe Biden has stepped down as presidential nominee of the Democrat party ahead of the 2024 elections.
This came after months of calls on him to step down, following concerns about his age and capacity to lead the American people.
He made this announcement in a statement issued on Sunday July 21 2024, part of which reads as follows:
‘’My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best’’
‘’I will speak to the Nation later this week in more details about my decision, ‘’ the statement added.
While his campaign team has severally discounted the impact of the President’s Biden’s age on his fitfulness to contest and lead the American people, Presidient’s Biden’s fragility has been conspicuously evident.
Beyond criticism from his arch rival, some democrats had raised concerns about President’s Biden’s capacity, given his floundering public appearances and speeches.
The pressure for Biden to step down came to head following his much anticipated debate with Donald Trump, where he reportedly fell short of impressing his supporters.
Ahead of this development, reports have suggested that the Republicans were working to turn their attack machinery on Vice President Kamala Harris who appears most likely to succeed President Biden.
