Washington, D.C. — April 26, 2026 — President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly evacuated from the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night after an armed suspect charged a Secret Service checkpoint outside the main ballroom and opened fire.

No one inside the ballroom was injured. One Secret Service officer was struck in the chest by gunfire but was saved by a bulletproof vest and is reported to be in good condition. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old former tutor from Torrance, California, was taken into custody at the scene.

According to President Trump and law enforcement officials, the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He rushed the magnetometer screening area approximately 50 yards from the ballroom entrance, prompting an immediate exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents and local police.

Attendees inside the ballroom dropped to the floor as armed Secret Service agents secured the dais. Video footage showed the president and first lady being escorted off the stage and out of the venue under heavy protection. Vice President JD Vance and other Cabinet members were also evacuated safely.

In a late-night press conference at the White House, President Trump praised the rapid response of law enforcement.
“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service,” he said. “I just spoke to the officer, and he’s doing great.”

Trump described the suspect as a “lone wolf” with no apparent connection to broader threats, including ongoing international conflicts. He added that he and the first lady were initially reluctant to leave but followed Secret Service guidance. The president also posted video of the incident on social media.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that Allen faces two federal charges: using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. He is expected to be arraigned Monday.
