The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has confirmed the reintroduction of road tolls.
Speaking at the sidelines of the Mid-year Budget review, the former Information Minister noted that the Minister of Fnance will not be introducing a new tax, as per his privileged information from cabinet.
Quizzed whether rumors about the reintroduction of the roads tolls were true, Oppong Nkrumah answered in affirmative.
‘‘Already the Minister of Roads has received cabinet approval to start processes of introducing the road tolls’’, he stated.
He noted that the reintroduction of the tolls was a part of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign policies.
The road tolls were removed with a justification that their continued existence caused massive road traffics.
Meanwhile, Edward Duncan, Secretary of Ghana Toll Workers Union has maintained that funds raised from tolls are not meant for construction but rather for road maintenance.
He opined that the opportunities created with operations of the toll should be enough.
‘‘Even if Ghana is not getting anything from the toll, isn’t it enough that it created jobs for the citizens?’’, he queried.
