The Parliament of Ghana has for the past few years been called on to pass the Non-Custodial Sentence Bill otherwise known as the Community Service Bill to help decongest prisons in Ghana.
The Assemblies of God represented by Reverend Joshua Kere, Head Pastor of LivingSprings International Worship Centre on behalf of the church saw to the release of inmates in the Ahafo, Bono and Bono East regions.
Last year 7 inmates were released from the Duayaw Nkwanta and Sunyani prisons after their fines were paid, this year 5 people were freed.
One of the beneficiaries mentioned that he was imprisoned for 12 months for failing to pay a fine of 1200 cedis.
Superintendent Stephen Nti commended the church for taking on such measure calling on the other bodies to take on such acts.
He mentioned that prisons congestion is a worldwide menace as space is an expensive commodity in prisons, however it can be managed if non-governmental organisations take on the payment of fines to help remedy the situation.
The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) is one organization that has been advocating for the pass of the bill.
