Ghana Police warn against apocalyptic predictions against watch night services

Prior to December 31 watchnight services, the Ghana Police Service has on December 27, 2022, issued a warning to religious groups and leaders to be mindful of end-of-year prophesies that could bring fear and panic to the nation.

Watch night services are evening services frequently employed by men of God to deliver prophecies.  As such, the police warned that Ghana’s laws still apply to religious freedom.

In a statement released on December 27, 2022, they further pleaded with the populace in general and faith-based organizations, in particular, to maintain conformity with the law regarding the dissemination of predictions.

“Let us continue to remember that whereas we have the right to practice our faith in religion, freedom of worship, and speech, this right must not be exercised in violation of the rights of others and the public interest,” part of the statement read.

It further stated that a person who publishes or reproduces a statement, rumor, or report that is likely to cause the public fear or alarm or to disrupt the peace with no proof that the statement, rumor, or report is accurate is guilty of a crime and could be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five years.
