South African’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected as ANC leader despite theft scandal

The African National Congress has reelected South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa as their leader making him win his second bid to run for presidency.  

Prior to the elections, the president was facing a theft scandal after Arthur Fraser, a former spy reported him at a police station in June for money laundering and covering up theft. Opposition party African Transformation Movement in a bid to make him unfavourable requested for the institution of Section 89 to contest his candidature.

Mr. Ramaphosa contemplated resigning from his position after allegations, an independent panel denounced his handling of the stolen money which is believed to have been stuffed in a sofa at his game farm, but reconsidered and denied wrongdoing.

However Cyril Ramaphosa won the election emerging with two thousand four hundred and seventy six (2476) votes against rival and former party treasurer and health minister, Zweli Mkhize who also had one thousand eight hundred and ninety seven votes.

This victory will see Cyril Ramaphosa lead the ANC in the 2024 election, which can see him lead the country for another five years.

President Cyril Ramaphosa took over the presidency from fellow party member Jacob Zuma who was also ousted on corruption allegations. His scandal came as a surprise to many since he promised to keep  a just front.
