Former Minister of Finance has rejected government’s proposed E-levy.
He was speaking at the Ghanaian Dream Lecture, held at Tang Palace Hotel in Accra, on Monday, November 29, 2021.
He remarked that the proposed e-levy amounts to double taxation and goes against all our efforts at making the youth venture into entrepreneurship within a digital economy.
He contends that because Ghanaians were already battered by taxes on the gifts and incomes they receive through momo or other electronic means, taxing same amounts to double taxing.
‘‘We cannot demand of our youth to rise if we do not offer them a platform to step on, a first step into employment and self-sufficiency. This is what government can and should do,’’ he asserted.
Since its announcements by the Minister of Finance, the prosed E-levies, which imposes 1.75% tax on electronic financial transactions, have been met with some opposition.
The Minister explained that the tax is part of measures to raise revenues to support job creation initiatives, construction of road infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure.
Notwithstanding the rationale, the Founder of the Institute for Fiscal Studies Dr Kwabena Duffuor think the move will be counter.
The maiden #TheGhanaianDream lecture is themed : Transforming the economy through job creation and opportunities for all .
