Agbogbloshie, Ghana: Shot Fired, Yet Another Civilians-Police/Military Face-off

Few days after civilian deaths in Ejura after shots were fired at youth protesters by the military, there has been another civilian-police/military clash shoot out.

From a video report by 3news.com, an audible sound of a gun shot could clearly be heard.

Whether the shot came from a protesting civilians or police and military officers with guns, is yet to be ascertained.

The onion traders have been reported to be resisting their removal from the Agbogbloshie market.

Stating that the condition of the roads leading to the market they’re being relocated to, Adjen Kotoku, and the general unreadiness of the place are their reasons for refusing to be relocated.

In an interview with Citi News, Public Relations Officer for the Progressive Co-Operative Onion Sellers Association, Rasheed Moro, called on the government to prioritize the fixing of the road leading to the new market.

“We are not prepared to go there, but we will see how we will collaborate with the Minister to enable us to move.

“But for now, we have bad roads there, which will not help us considering the trucks we use.

“We know he said he will fix the road, and so these are the preparations that we want the minister to look at”, Mr Rasheed Moro opined.

The resistance of the onion traders came in the form of stone pelting and burning of lorry tyres.

“I can see one man down but I don’t know what is wrong with him,” A TV3 Reporter said in a report.

Onion traders were expected to begin their business at the Adjen Kotoku Market in the Ga West Municipality from today, Thursday, July 1, 2021.

This follows a directive from the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey.

According to Mr. Quartey, the de-congestion exercise at the Agbogbloshie market is part of the ‘LET’S MAKE ACCRA WORK’ campaign to improve conditions in the national capital.

The Adjen Kotoku market which was established over a decade ago had been abandoned.
