Ghana Institute of Journalism, Ghana Institute of Languages and National Film and Television Institute merges into a university

The Ghana Institute of Journalism(GIJ), Ghana Institute of Languages(GIL) and National Film and Television Institute(NAFTI) have merged into University of Media, Arts and Communication(UniMAC).

The decision to merge these universities began in 2019 and has finally been concluded under a bill passed by the president in association with an Act of Parliament (Act 1059) in May 2022.

The merge, emerged with a logo which was designed by Noel Nutsugah, a lecturer of the then GIJ, which tends to signify oneness among the three institutes.

Prof. Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, the then rector of GIJ, who is now the current Vice Chancellor of the merged institution said, “We have developed a comprehensive logo which is a reflective of a brand that is more dynamic and solid and symbolizes the vibrancy of the future we aspire to be as a unit university”.

The Universities are now focused on creating a serene learning environment for the students and to improve the skills of the students in their preferred fields. 

The launch which took place at GIJ north Dzorwulu campus, was witnessed by the staff and students of the three institutions. 

Prof. Kwesi Yankah, the chairman of the University Council said “With this, we will tell a story of a collective identity, an identity that unveils the distinctive character of our university and share with you a beautiful future that awaits us”.

On the base of identity in regards to the institution, Prof. Kwansah-Aidoo said that the institutes would work as a constituent so as not to lose their identities. 

They would be known as, UniMAC-GIJ campus, UniMAC-NAFTI campus and UniMAC-GIL campus respectively.
