The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have finally announced a reduction in transport fares by 15.3 percent effective today, December 19, 2022.
“Following the negotiations, and in consideration with the plight of drivers, commuters and the public, we have resolved to reduce the existing transport fares by 15.3%,” a joint statement issued by the General Secretary of the GRTCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, and the General Secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, disclosed.
The statement issued by the two transport institutions communicated that commercial buses (trotros) that formerly charged GH¢8 per mile will now charge GH¢6.80, while the tariff of GH¢29 per mile has been decreased to GH¢25.
The statement however, discloses that the reduction in transport fares also affects shared taxis, intercity transport (long distance) as well as haulage services.
Touching on the price for shared taxis, it stated that shared taxis that previously charged a rate of GH¢2 will now charge a reduced fare of GH¢1.70, while those that previously attracted a rate of GH¢12 will instead charge a reduced fare of GH¢10.20.
Prior to this announcement, a number of negotiations were held with stakeholders to reach a consensus on an acceptable level of reduction.
Oye News spoke to some passengers on the reduction in transport fares.
Yoshua Domedjui, a Ghanaian who plies the Kaneshie road to Labadi, said, “The reduction of transport fares hasn’t affected me yet. The same price was taken this morning, so I hope it will be reduced soon.”
Another Ghanaian, named Emmanuel Kayode, disclosed that the reduction in transport fares has affected the usual charge he pays every morning to work.
