Wa Civilians Assault: Demotions & 30-Day Detentions Handed To Military
Rouge military personnel involved in assaults of Wa residents, have been handed demotions and 30-day detentions as punishment.
This was revealed after a 4-member committee tasked to investigate the assault in the Upper East Regional capital submitted its preliminary findings.
Three of the perpetrators, of Orderly, Guard Commander and the Sentry ranks, have been demoted from their current ranks to lower ranks.
The Orderly has been demoted from Staff Sergeant to Corporal whilst the Guard Commander and the Sentry have been demoted from Corporal to Private and Lance Corporal to Private respectively.
The trial of the Duty officer who is a Lieutenant will, however, commence later.
JoyNews reports that 8 other soldiers who were seen on various videos assaulting civilians have been charged, tried and handed 30 days detention each.
All of the eight are said to be junior rank (Privates).
The punishment was pronounced by the disciplinary committee chaired by the Commanding Officer.
Eighty-six soldiers were identified to have allegedly taken part in the act, unsanctioned by the military.
They have so far interrogated nearly 30 of them and will continue the interrogation on Thursday.
The preliminary investigation also revealed that 11 persons suffered various degrees of injuries.
Gafur Mahama, one of the victims, developed a fracture on his thighbone and had undergone surgery.
Three others were admitted to the Wa Municipal Hospital.
Some of the victims interrogated reported the loss of 13 mobile phones, a tricycle and an amount of GHc1,460 for three different people.
They have, however, retrieved 7 mobile phones and the tricycle returned to its owner. They are yet to receive any said sum of money.
The investigation revealed that the incident started when a soldier whose name is withheld on June 30 alleged his mobile phone was snatched from around 6:00 pm.
He informed his colleague private soldier who in turn informed the Duty Officer that same day.
The Duty Officer is alleged to have permitted the troops to go to town to search for the missing mobile phone which consequently led to the alleged brutality in Wa.
The 86 young soldiers who were part of the act passed out between April 30, 2021, and June 4, 2021, and were posted to the 10 Mechanized Battalion Aggrey barracks.
Upon arrival at the barracks, they were granted a month leave and returned on June 30, a day before the incident ensued.
The 4-member team comprised of personnel from the military and the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) and is led by Colonel B. Z Ayorrogo.
The other members are Lt Col George Eduah Beesi, Francis Aboagye and Maxwell Dassah.
The investigation is under the auspices of the National Security.
The question of whether the repercussions of the crime committed by these military personnel is justice enough will be asked.
So will that of whether their military status may have earned them leniency and how a civilian, tried in a civilian court for the exact action, may have paid a steeper price.
