According to Ghanaian hiplife rapper Pope Skinny, there is no fixed system to secure the future of musicians in Ghana, unless they travel out of the country to do odd jobs that even pay better.
“That is why you see and hear most veteran creatives needy and asking for help from others, especially in their old age. It is not because they are irresponsible or lazy, it’s because the Ghanaian system doesn’t cover creatives.”, explained the ‘Hot Cake‘ collaborator.
He went on to state that the creative job does not come with SSNIT contributions, which means those in the Ghanaian creative art industry would have to look for other ways to earn extra.
Speaking to Nana Romeo on Accra FM’s Ayekoo show, Pope Skinny lamented that the creative arts system in Ghana has a lack that, often, renders musicians financially handicapped.
“I thought to myself once that if our leaders do not think about our welfare as creatives, then we will have to leave, go do jobs that are beneath us and secure our future. Currently, I operate a big truck in America and I am earning more than what I used to get through my musical career in Ghana.”
