Dean of the UPSA law School, Professor Kofi Abotsi has warned against what he describes as the privatization of electoral process and outcomes.
‘‘The gains and outcome of an elections are privatized,’ he observed.
He explained that the winner takes all phenomenon, which has been typical of our political tradition, has not served the country.
According to the respected legal luminary, the situation where the political class only considers their friends and contemporaries in the allocation of resources after an election, leaves many who do not belong to any political party sidelined.
‘‘In this sense, we have privatized the elections itself. We have privatized the outcome of the elections. …We go to the polls to elect a government, but that government comes to power and see itself as representing only a section of few’’, he stated.
He made these observations in an interview with JoyFM.
Ghana is heading to the polls this December. Expectedly, the main contention is between the ruling New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress. Whereas the former wants to break the 8-year political cycle, the former is seeking to renew the mandate of President John Dramani Mahama.
