Mr. Austin Gamey, a Labor expert, has expressed shock and disappointment in the Management of SSNIT for going ahead with the not botched sales of 4 of its hotels despite widespread opposition.
He noted that such action by SSNIT smack off disrespect.
‘‘The monies do not belong to the government. Neither does it belong to the management of SSNIT.’’ he stated.
He also criticized the National Pensions Regulatory Authority for pandering to the desires of political actors instead of the vulnerable workers who contribute to the scheme
Mr. Gamey mentioned that as a person who fully participated in the drafting of the current SSNIT ACT, he was fully convinced that the ACT has fallen short of meeting the expectations and needs of contributors of SSNIT.
He made these observations in an interview on Joy FM.
He lauded organized labor for mounting a united front against the divestiture attempts, demanding a dismantling and recomposition of the SSNNIT board.
He contended that government’s continued hold on the NPRA and SSNIT have been a bane to the successful and independent operations of these entities.
SSNIT’s attempt to offload 60% shares in 4 of its hotel portfolios has drawn widespread criticism with many citing procurement and statutory breaches.
The NPRA’s directive to SSNIT to proceed with the deal appeared to have been the last stroke on the camel’s back, leading to organize labor announcing what can be described as the biggest industrial action in recent history.
