Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has revealed that he sent an email to Britain’s Finance Minister, Kwesi Kwarteng after his dismissal as the Chancellor for UK Prime Minister, Mary Elizabeth Truss.
In an interview with TV3’s Paa Kwesi Asare in Washington DC, he was in a great shock after hearing the dismissal of his friend.
According to Ken Ofori-Atta, what pains him most was the fact that Kwesi Kwarteng is a Ghanaian who had almost reach the highest level and had to suffer in this manner.
“The pain or sadness is that he is a Ghanaian reaching almost the highest level, Chancellor of the Exchequer. Yes, we sat together three days ago.
“I am always very optimistic, if one is really doing things in truth there might be some waves but the Lord will see him through. I was surprised at what happened. I have sent an email to him, I told him the Lord knows best,” Ofori-Atta said.
Mr. Kwesi Kwarteng was fired from his post by UK Prime Minister, Mary Elizabeth Truss amidst the government’s tax cuts believed to have sparked financial market turmoil.
He was sacked on Friday, October 14, 2022, only weeks into the job, making him Britain’s second shortest serving Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Mr. Kwarteng served for 38 days in the job; Tory Chancellor Ian Macleod also served for 30 days in 1970 before he died after a heart attack.
In a letter reacting to his dismissal, Mr. Kwarteng said: “You have asked me to step aside as your Chancellor, I have accepted.
“When you asked me to serve as your Chancellor, I did so in full knowledge that the situation we faced was incredibly difficult, with rising global interest rates and energy prices. However, your vision of optimism, growth and change was right.
“We have been colleagues and friends for many years. In that time I have seen your dedication and determination. I believe your vision is the right one. It has been an honour to serve as your first Chancellor,” Mr. Kwarteng tweeted.
Meanwhile, according to TheIndiaExpress.com, Jeremy Hunt, a former Health and Foreign Secretary, will now serve as Britain’s finance minister.
