GH6.874 billion on rice importation-Alan Kyeramanteng

Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyeremanteng has made some disclosures about the   country’s food import bill for the past four years.

The Minister estimated cost of these other food stuff, as such:

Fish – GH₵3.993 billion; Chicken (processed) – GH₵1.881 billion; Meat – GH₵487 million; Vegetables – GH₵281million and Poultry – GH₵184 million

He took his turn to respond to questions posed by HON. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for Tamale, who had sought to understand how much government has spent for the importation of rice and other food stuff over the past four years.

According to the Minister, Ghana has spent an estimated GH₵6.874 billion on rice importation rice from 2017 to 2020.

The Minister further revealed that while the government’s ban on small rice importation has not been lifted, the Ministry has a management system in place to avert shortage of rice in the country.

‘‘Rice is a staple food in Ghana and as such one had to maintain a delicate balance between the quantity of rice produced locally and what was imported to ensure that there were no serious shortages,’’ he explained.

He assured that the ban on small scale rice import will be reviewed, once there was significant local rice production in the country.
