Member of Parliament for the Asewase Constituency in the Ashanti region has stated that his side in Parliament would resist any attempt to sacrifice the sanctity of constitutional and parliamentary processes on the altar of emergency.
The First Deputy Speaker, HON. Joseph Osei Owusu, on Friday, 10 December, 2021, rejected a motion by the Minority to revisit the processes leading to the approval of the 2022 budget.
In a letter in response of the First Deputy Speaker’s ruling, the Minority has disagreed with the decision of the First Deputy Speaker to reject their motion to quash the decision of November, 30, 2021, which saw the Majority side approving the 2022 budget they had rejected.
The Minority further described as biased, erroneous and abuse of the powers vested in a first deputy speaker.
Speaking in an interview with CitiFM, the Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka remarked that the decision by the Deputy Speaker to reject the budget against the standing orders of the house.
He reiterated that the Minority’s Opposition against the budget will not change until, they are convinced the budget will serve the interest of the poor and vulnerable Ghanaians.
The Asawase Member of Parliament, however, refuted the notion that the Minority in Parliament is seeking to obstruct government’s business.
‘’We are doing what we are doing to hold the sanctity of our processes. There is no a single committee meeting that we have absented ourselves. We can assure His Majesty, all Pastors and Imams that we are not here to obstruct the government,’’ he stated.
He further vowed that the Minority intends taking the issue up with the Speaker of Parliament, Right Speaker, Alban Bagbin, upon his return.
