Phone Dealers at Kwame Nkrumah Circle have expressed mixed feelings about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise to remove import duties on mobile phones when elected as president in 2025.
It is recalled that during the party’s Manifesto launch, the running mate of the ruling New Patriotic Party announced several tax cuts.
He also promised tax amnesty to companies which have defaulted in honoring their tax obligations.
Dr. Bawumia also promised to abolish the betting tax, E-levy, Sanitation levies, among a host of other taxes.
But responding to this promise in a UTV Vox pox, closely monitored by Oyenews, some phone dealers split hair over the feasibility of such promise.
Whereas some affirmed their belief in the promise, others casted doubt over same.
‘‘A phone that cost GHC 600 to clear now cost GHC 900, how can I believe this story from Bawumia,’ a visibly enraged interviewee noted.
I believe in Bawumia. In fact, NPP has is credited with so many of social intervention policy and I have no doubt Bawumia can deliver on his promise,’’ another stated.
Going into the 2024 elections, the two leading political parties have been making promises to scale back on taxes, which is fast taking a toll on cost of living.
The National Democratic Congress’ Flagbearer, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, has also promised several tax cuts when voted into government.
