Eight school children from the Atigakome community in the Bono East Region have been reported dead after a boat carrying them to school capsized on Volta Lake on Tuesday, 24th January, 2023.
The boat, carrying 20 school children including the deceased was traveling from Atikagome to Wayokope, where their school is located.
However, 12 of the children managed to swim to safety.
Ibrahim Wudonyim, the Sene East District Director of NADMO, informed Graphic Online that before they arrived at the scene of the disaster, some members of the local community and Marine Police had been able to remove all eight remains from the Lake.
According to him, the deceased included five boys and three girls between the ages of five and 12.
The deceased have been transported to the fishing village of Atikagome.
As a result of the occurrence, the community is in mourning, shock, and terror.
