Head teachers of some Secondary school have called on government to eliminate some freebies associated with the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy.

According to them, this will relieve strain on government purse, allowing the government to re-channel funds into the provision of food products.

Speaking to Citi News, a head teacher under the condition of anonymity disclosed that his pupils aren’t getting the proper nutrition. They are served without protein and fruits as the school has run out of food items.

He also indicated that parents should be given the opportunity to support the government in providing food for the students because they are willing and able to do so.

“Free uniforms should be cancelled, free church service attire, breakfast and supper should be taken care of by parents, not the government. And we keep on drumming this, and I don’t understand this, because parents are capable of taking care of their children.

“This thing has gone beyond politics. We are talking about Ghana, as we speak, we don’t have a single tin of sardine in my school. I don’t remember the last time we gave them eggs and fruits,” a head teacher of a Senior High School who spoke on Eyewitness News lamented.

Despite obvious flaws with the policy, the government has repeatedly rebuffed requests for a review of the policy from civil society organizations and observers of the school sector.
