The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has indicated that his ministry is collaborating with heads of tertiary institutions to eliminate all irrelevant programs.

According to him, there are several programs at the tertiary level that do not meet the needs of the labor market.

Speaking at the University of Ghana’s 74th Annual New Year School, the sector minister highlighted that the high rate of unemployment in the nation is as a result of programs that have no connection to the labor market.

He underlined the government’s plans to improve the situation.

“So many students have enrolled in diploma in education. They’re being trained for jobs that do not exist. Thousands and thousands are graduating for jobs that do not exist … I’m fully aware and we’re engaging the Universities,” he said.

“I think we need to focus on courses that have relevance to that particular student and to the nation.

“We need to change course. Because unemployment invariably comes from the fact that we’re training the graduates for courses that don’t exist,” Dr Adutwum added.

The minister’s statement add to the recent call on government and policy makers to make education more job oriented.

Ghana’s rate of unemployment is increasing by the year, with many young graduates finding it difficult to land decent jobs.

Meanwhile, government continue to insist that they are working constantly to address the unemployment situation.
