Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission has disclosed that funding for HIV/AIDS response in Ghana is inadequate.

According to him, an equivalent of $130 million is required every year. He further stated that due to the economic crisis, the government is unable to provide such funds making them rely on donors.

“We have been donor dependant and now donors are requesting for a burden share, therefore countries will have to pay 60% of the cost of HIV/AIDS program whiles donors continue to support with 40,” he said.

In an interview on JoyNews, Dr. Atuahene further stated that Ghana is yet to reach the 60% threshold and measures have been put in place to address that.

“We are working with the government to address that. Very soon the national HIV fund will be launched and then we will know what the government is putting on the table.”

Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene called for support from private sectors, churches, philanthropists, and the public to contribute to the fund.
