The President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Professor Frimpong Manso has stated that the E-levy will not amount to anything if government does not take steps to stamp out corruption in the country.

The Electronic levy bill seeks to impose 1.75 percent charges on some form of electronic transactions, including Momo transactions.

This has been at the center of controversy between the New Patriotic Party, the Opposition, National Democratic Congress and other stakeholders.

The Ghana Association of Mobile Money Agents, had threatened to go on a strike, describing the developed as counterproductive to their business.

The government says it is seeking to raise some 6.9 billion from E-levy to facilitate its infrastructural and youth entrepreneurial agenda.

This proposition has since been rejected by the Minority in Parliament, who have described the E-levy as draconian and insensitive to the already burdened Ghanaians

But Speaking in an interview with CitiNews, the respectable man of God, averred that the E-levy will not achieve its intended purpose, if government fails to plug all the loopholes in the systems.

He drew an analogy between fetching water into a basket to underscore his point.

‘’The amount that we are seeking to raise through the E-levy is less than what we lose every year, when we see the reports of the Auditor-General and Public Accounts Committee. E-levies will amount to nothing, if we do not handle and tackle corruption, ‘’ he stated.

According to him, while he does not have any issue with the imposition of the E-levy, he has a problem with the situation where amount generated will dissipate through corruption.
