A research Fellow with Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Dr. Ivy Asantewaa has advised Ghanaians to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocol, as they head into the Christmas yuletide.

She noted that the WHO do not have full sequencing of the newly discovered Omnicron variant.

She asked revelers to get vaccinated, wear their masks properly, remain physically distant and wash their hands regularly to avoid contracting the virus.

‘‘Change your mask every 5 to 6 hours. Consider an open party rather than closed locations with air conditioners,’’ she advised.

Dr. Asantewaa noted that whilst the WHO works on determining the transmutability rate of the new variant, it behooves of Ghanaians to work hard at protecting themselves against the  virus.

Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, announced Wednesday that the country had confirmed some cases of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 without giving the specific number of persons affected.

This followed a statement by Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), which said 34 out of the 120 samples collected from travelers arriving at the Kotoka International Airport between Nov. 21 and 24, turned out positive for the omnicron variant.
