Member for Parliament for Banda Constituency and Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ibrahim Ahmed, has taken a swipe at government for directing the suspension of National Petroleum stabilization and recovery levies, without recourse to Parliament.

His comments follow plans of the government, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), to suspend the price stabilization fund and the recovery levies for the next two months, to ease the burden on consumers.

He was speaking on the  Kukurantumi show on Asempa FM.

He wondered why the executive could not wait for parliament, which is currently in recess, to resume before the announcement.

He reasoned that the government could have recalled parliament to approve the suspension of the stabilization levies, if same was so urgent.

‘‘I am very disappointed in the President. This is an indictment and disrespect on the parliament. The Executive cannot unilaterally take the decision to vary the prices petroleum prices without parliament,’’ he lamented.

He remarked that allowing the directive to stand will amount to allowing one arm of government to impose its will on the other.

He promised to get the Minority to issue its official position on this directive in the coming days.
