Government to begin the construction of 6 new regional and 88 district hospitals across Ghana this year.
Government of Ghana in an update this evening, stated that it will be commencing the construction Six (6) new regional and eighty-eight (88) district hospitals in newly created region and districts without hospitals across the nation this year.
Speaking on a live telecast update, he said the virus has revealed the unequal distribution of health care facilities across the country since the focus of infrastructure has been geared towards only Accra and Kumasi, therefore the need to construct these hospitals.
He said “there are eighty-eight districts in our country without hospitals; we have six new regions without regional hospitals; we do not have infectious disease centers dotted across the country; we do not have enough testing and isolation centers for diseases like Covid-19. We must do something urgently about this. That is why the Government has decided to undertake a major investment in our healthcare infrastructure , the largest in our history”
The construction of the 88 hospitals will begin this year according to the President. Ten (10) new hospitals will be constructed in the Ashanti region, nine in the Volta and central regions of Ghana.
There will eight (8) hospitals to be constructed in the Eastern and seven (7) each for the Greater Accra and Upper East regions respectively.
The Northern region, Oti region, Upper West region and the Bono region will all receive 5 newly constructed hospitals, with Western and Western north regions to receive four (4) hospitals each.
The Ahafo and Savannah regions will both get three newly constructed hospitals each and the Bono East and North East regions to receive two newly constructed hospital each.
The President revealed that Effia-Nkwanta Hospital in the Sekondi will be rehabilitated.
He continued to say that there will be a construction of new laboratories, and the already existing ones will be beefed up.
There will also be an establishment of three news disease control centers for each of the zones od our country, thus Coastal,Middle and Northern belts of the country with the overall objective of setting up a Ghana centre for Disease Control.
“Each of the hospitals to be constructed will be a quality, standard-design, one hundred-bed hospital, with accommodation for Doctors, nurses and other health workers with intention of completing them this year” the President said.
