Seven residents of Anyinam in Obuasi including the Assembly Member for the area who blocked an access road to the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) mine in Obuasi as part of a protest have been remanded into prison custody for unlawful assembly and unlawful demonstration.
In addition to the unlawful assembly and unlawful demonstration, they have also been charged with causing unlawful damage to a military vehicle.
They were remanded into prison custody to reappear on March 23, 2020, when they were arraigned before the Fomena District Court on Monday, March 9, 2020.
As part of a protest against what they said were a deliberate attempt by AGA to deny residents in the area employment, the accused persons on March 8, 2020, blocked the road leading to AGA Obuasi mine and prevented workers from accessing the site.
The accused persons are Joshuah Boafo, 31; Joseph Hagan, 42; Margaret Codbad, 47; Felix Barrels, 52; Owusu Perkis, 21; Akosua Tamba, 40 and Richard Cudjoe, the Assembly Member.
