At its sitting on December 21, 2021, Parliament was adjourned sine die, without considering the controversial E-Levy.
The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin, who was expected to take his seat, was conspicuously missing from Parliament.
Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensa-Bonsu moved the motion for the house to adjourn.
Among others, the Suame Member of Parliament argued that the move is to ensure a serene environment for consideration of the controversial E-Levy.
Attempts to consider the E-levy bill in parliament was characterized by some chaotic scenes.
This followed the decision of the First Deputy Speaker, HON. Joseph Osei Owusu, to vacate the Speaker’s seat for the Second Deputy Speaker, hence allowing him a casting vote.
The Minority has vowed not to accept the levies, which they describe as draconian and insensitive.
This position has been rejected by the Majority who considers the Levy as a panacea to Ghana’s infrastructural deficit and growing unemployment rate.
