Heavy Flooding Traps Residents in Accra Suburbs After Torrential Rains

Hundreds of residents are trapped in their homes in Afienya and several other parts of the Greater Accra Region following heavy rains that lashed the capital last night. Widespread flooding has disrupted daily activities and blocked major roads across the metropolis.

Key routes including the Weija-Kasoa Road have been completely blocked, while the N1 highway is largely submerged, bringing traffic to a standstill. The Fiesta Royale area is also underwater, adding to the chaos caused by the downpour. The Ghana Standards Authority to Shiashie stretch is restricted to one lane, and the Atomic Roundabout remains flooded and impassable.

The Legon-GIMPA By-Pass Road is blocked near the new Law School building, while Alajo and other low-lying communities are severely inundated.

Reports from Citi FM this morning highlighted the rapid escalation of the floods, with residents calling for urgent intervention from authorities. Many homes have been invaded by floodwaters, forcing families to seek higher ground where possible.

The flooding comes amid the rainy season, raising concerns over poor drainage systems and infrastructure challenges in the capital. Emergency services are expected to respond to affected areas as water levels remain high.

Local authorities have been urged to provide immediate relief and clear blocked roads to restore normalcy. Residents are advised to avoid flooded areas and stay informed through official weather updates.
