The general public has been informed that Wednesday, July 1, 2026, which is Republic Day, will be observed as a statutory public holiday. However, due to it falling on a Wednesday, the government has shifted the official observance.
His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana has, by Executive Instrument (E.I), declared Friday, July 3, 2026, as a Public Holiday in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), as amended.
The holiday is to be observed throughout the country. The announcement was signed by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), and issued on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. It aims to provide a more convenient long weekend for citizens and businesses. Republic Day commemorates the day Ghana became a republic on July 1, 1960.
The adjustment allows workers and the public to enjoy an extended break from Wednesday through Friday. Government institutions, banks, schools, and most private businesses are expected to remain closed on Friday, July 3, 2026.
Essential services will however continue as usual. The Minister urged all citizens to use the holiday to reflect on Ghana’s republican journey while observing the day peacefully. This marks the latest adjustment of a public holiday to optimise national productivity and rest.
