Four persons detained in Hohoe on suspicion of cocoa smuggling

The Hohoe Municipal Police Command has detained four persons for attempting to sneak two trucks full of dried cocoa beans through illegal routes in the Hohoe Municipality to the Republic of Togo.

The suspects who were in the two trucks were apprehended for allegedly taking part in the illegal activity of smuggling cocoa, which is defined as a crime by law.

However, the police have granted bail to Senyo Aniewu, 26, Ali Fataw, 32, Kwame Delali, 36, and Ali Tahiru, 28 years old, pending investigations.

According to reports, the Hohoe Police Command received a tip-off that some people were carrying cocoa beans from Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region through Hohoe to the adjacent Republic of Togo at around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 25, 2022.

The two vehicles with the license plates GS 3107 13 and GR 5999 K were stopped by the police when they arrived at the Ho-Fume section of the Eastern Corridor road.

Following a vehicle check, 200 bags of cocoa beans were discovered. The four suspects admitted to taking part in the crime when questioned.

Addressing the press, the Director in Charge of Special Services of the Ghana COCOBOD, Charles Amenyaglo, said, “the Police have begun a manhunt for the owner of the vehicles and cocoa beans.”

He further commended the effort of the Hohoe police and pleaded with the public to expose culprits who involve in illegal smuggling of cocoa into Togo.
