DR. Afriyie Hits Back: I did not Insult the Speaker

The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie has insisted that he did not insult the Speaker to warrant the embarrassment of being ushered out of parliament.

The Former Minister of Environment and Science noted that the Speaker’s action in recent times has not been pleasant, a reason for his open confrontation.

It is recalled that during a parliamentary session of July 22 2024, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Suman Babgbin ordered the Marshall of Parliament to escort the member of parliament out of the chamber, citing disrespectful comments by the MP.

The Member of parliament had protested what he described as the speaker’s prejudicial comments on a letter conveying the nomination of two persons to the supreme court.

In the ensuing melee the visibly incensed speaker ordered that the Member of parliament be ushered out of parliament, warning members against such conduct.

However, speaking on Top Story on Joy FM, Dr. Afriyie insisted the Speaker of parliament’s action was unwarranted.

He further dissociated himself from an apology that had been rendered to the speaker by the Majority Chief Whip, Hon. Annor Dompreh.

Dr. Afriyie contends that over the period, the speaker’s penchants to get into the arena of debate in the chamber has undermined his position as an independent arbiter.

‘‘The Speaker was supposed to be a referee. The way he went about it, obviously, he was pursuing a certain path,’ he added.
