Disturbing CCTV Footage Sparks Outrage as Calls Grow for Ghana to Demand Accountability From US Authorities
A disturbing incident in Brooklyn, New York, has sparked concern among Ghanaians following the discovery of the body of 24-year-old Ghanaian Joseph Owusu inside a duffel bag abandoned on a roadside.
CCTV footage reportedly shows two unidentified men removing a large black bag from the boot of a white sedan and leaving it on the pavement. The following morning, another individual reportedly moved the bag using a hand truck, believing it contained discarded materials, before the shocking discovery was made.
Joseph’s family is devastated and is demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding his death. His brother, Kojo Yeboah, has publicly appealed for justice, saying his brother did not deserve to die in such a manner.
The case has also triggered calls for the Ghanaian government to take a stronger diplomatic position and ensure that the death of a Ghanaian citizen abroad receives the seriousness it deserves.
Many Ghanaians are questioning whether the same level of urgency and cooperation shown by American authorities in cases involving their citizens in Ghana is being extended to Ghanaians living in the United States.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured the family that the government will engage relevant US law enforcement agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation. Officials from Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations have also visited the bereaved family.
While the investigation continues, the cause of Joseph’s death has not yet been officially established, and US authorities have not classified the case as a homicide.
Ghana must continue to demand answers. Our citizens deserve protection, dignity and justice, wherever they find themselves.
If international cooperation is expected when American citizens are involved, that cooperation must also work both ways.
JUSTICE FOR JOSEPH OWUSU! 🇬🇭🕊️
