Two persons believed to be behind the trafficking of foreign nationals to engage in begging in Ghana have been arrested by the police in the Ashanti Region.
The suspects, a driver and his accomplice were picked up on Monday 13th January, 2023 after over 20 Nigeriens transported to Ghana were left stranded at a basic school in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.
The driver and one other person who brought them claimed that Ghana was their final destination, despite the nationals’ claims that they were traveling from Niger to Ivory Coast in transit.
The nationals both adults and children sought shelter in the open at a basic school for three days.
Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly officials intervened after learning of the presence of foreigners in the area, which led to the two people’s arrest.
Over 700 foreign beggars were recently repatriated, but some of them are now returning to communities in the Ashanti Region.
