The CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) defending champions are going to be returning to the tournament after announcing their withdrawal before the tournament started.
The Moroccan team won the 2018 and also the 2022 editions of the tournament.
However, before the tournament started, the North African nation announced its withdrawal from the competition.
This was caused by a misunderstanding of a long lasting row between Morocco and the host nation Algeria with the Moroccan team prevented from flying directly to its Constantine base for the competition.
Algeria stopped all flights from Morocco in 2021 over its long standing grudge with its North African neighbor over Morocco’s stance on Western Sahara.
However, some dialogue has been helped and now the Moroccan team would be able to travel to Algeria and compete in the tournament.
Morocco is playing against Ghana, Sudan and Madagascar in Group C at the group stage.
A statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs read, “The Moroccan national team will travel tomorrow to Algeria to participate in CHAN. The departure will be from Salé airport.”
