Refund fees paid beyond 15% Increment – Education Ministry to public universities

The Ministry of Education has ordered the University of Ghana Legon (UG) and other public universities to refund fees paid beyond the 15% threshold.

The ministry considers this act as illegal and cautions all public institutions to refund monies above the 15% increment to the students.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Mr. Kwesi Kwarteng, the Public Relations officer of the Ministry of Education said, the refunds are expected to be made by the public universities to students without any delays.

“The expectation is that any person that paid more than the approved fees should have his or her money refunded, which the University authorities agreed to.

“The approved fee is 15% per charge so if you charge anybody more than that, it is only fair that you make a refund,” Mr. Kwesi Kwarteng said.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutuwm on Thursday, January 5, 2023, instructed the management of the various public universities to comply with the authorized 15% Increment.

Following the disconcertment against the increment of fees from student bodies, the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) instructed all public tertiary institutions to review fees for the next academic year by a maximum 15% increment.

However, the University of Ghana is said to have been charging more than the approved fees for the next academic year.
