Government of Ghana grants amnesty to 808 convict prisoners

The government of Ghana amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic breakout, in accordance with the Article 72(1) of the constitution of the Republic of Ghana has granted Amnesty to 808 convict prisoners.

The government of Ghana did this upon the recommendation of The Prison Services council and in consultation with the Council of state.

A total number of 783 first offenders who have served half of their sentences were granted Amnesty. Eleven (11) inmates where were seriously ill were also granted Amnesty.

Seven inmates on death row are to be commuted to life imprisonment as an Amnesty grant. Also, four (4) inmates serving life sentences are to be commuted to 20years definite term.

Three inmates who were all above 70years and very old were also grant amnesty to be released outright.
