Chairman Wontumi Sentenced to 20 Years’ Imprisonment with Hard Labour for Illegal Mining

Court Hands Down Stiff Sentence Over Illegal Mining at Samreboi Despite Pleas for Leniency

Chairman Wontumi has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of engaging in illegal mining activities at Samreboi.
The court delivered the sentence despite appeals from the defence for leniency. Prosecutors argued that the illegal mining operations had caused significant environmental damage and undermined efforts to combat illegal mining across the country.

The ruling is expected to reinforce the government’s stance against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” and serve as a warning to individuals and organizations involved in unlawful mining activities.
Further details regarding the court’s judgment and any possible appeal are yet to be announced.
