Kumasi Zoo Records High Patronage

The Kumasi Zoo has recorded high patronage as hundreds of people mainly kids, parents and teachers thronged the zoo as part of the holiday celebration.

The manager of the zoo, Dr. Meyir Ziekah said the zoo has seen unprecedented increment in the number of visitors in the last quarter of the year especially December.

“We have actually seen so many visitors come to the zoo from all over the country, from the northern sector, western, eastern southern and Asanteman itself,” he said.

He added that, “We didn’t have a very good collection of animals and there were efforts to bring in iconic animals like the lion and other animals. We’re currently working to bring in other iconic animals to attract more customers.”

Acording to him, the management of the Forestry Commission has put in effort to refurbish the place.

The 65-year-old zoo has outdated cages and did not really have a good collection of animals.

He called on private individuals and non-governmental organisations to support the zoo like it’s done at most zoos across the world and also support the effort of government to carry out the purpose of the zoo which is conservation education.

On conservation, he said the zoo is playing a pivotal role in the conservation of vultures.

“Population of vultures have dwindled, they are protected here and their numbers are increasing.”

He added that they would fly out to complement the population of vultures outside.
