Seven Killed, One Injured in new Bawku Clashes

Seven people feared dead in Bawku in the Upper East region after renewed clashes as a result of the murder of an old man.

Renewed ethnic clashes between the Kusasi and Mamprusi tribes in Bawku on Saturday, December 17 2022 led to the death of five people after erratic gunshots, with two killed in addition on Sunday, December 18, leaving one injured.

The incident is believed to have started after the murder of an old man in Sing-Naatin.

A young man in his twenties however is said to be in the process of receiving treatment at the Quality Medical Centre in Garu.

According to the Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP David Fianko-Okyere, the police are not certain of what exactly triggered the clash and have commenced investigations.

In the meantime, commercial activities have come to a halt at Bawku once again as residents are compelled to stay indoors.

Alhaji Sumaila Issaka in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in September 2022 is quoted to have said “We don’t know who is fighting who, is it Mamprusis fighting Kusasis or Kusasis fighting Moshies, or vice versa or is it an ‘all for all war’ or people want to their arms, because those dying belong to all the tribes.”
