Following an uptick in the deaths of drinkers hit by vehicles after falling asleep on the street, police in Japan’s capital are advising people to limit their alcohol consumption this holiday season.
As of November 25, 10 individuals had been killed in similar accidents this year, Tokyo police reported in a recent Twitter post – representing 22% of all pedestrian deaths in the capital.
“That’s more than double what it was last year. “Pedestrians, please drink in moderation!” stated the post.
Police are concerned that the death toll may rise further when individuals attend end-of-year celebrations and office parties, especially once nightlife resumes after Covid restrictions are lifted.
