Ghana’s 4x100m men relay team has qualified for the World Championships in Budapest next year.
This follows a fast adjustment of the qualification standards when the World Athletics regulatory board yesterday postponed the Guangzhou 2023 World Relays to 2025.
Due to the persisting pandemic circumstances, the Guangzhou organizing committee (LOC) and the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA) agreed to postpone the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 23, which were set for May 13-14, 2023.
The World Athletics governing body’s decision has direct implications for the relay qualification system at next year’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Following Council agreement, the World Athletics Competition Commission issued a revised set of qualifying regulations.
The top eight teams from the previous World Athletics Championships compete, same to the qualification method for the Oregon 2022.
According to World Athletics, the aim is to mimic a comparable qualification method by still qualifying a portion of the field through direct competition and a portion by performance during the qualification period.
Ghana’s men relay team finished fifth in the relay final in Oregon, qualifying automatically alongside Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Jamaica, South Africa, Brazil, and France.
The improvements to the Budapest qualifying system are described in detail.
