Western Region records 54 deaths in road accidents within 6 months

A statistics shared by the Western Region Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Isaac Kwesi Sorkpah, indicates that 54 people have been killed in road accident for the first half of 2022 in Western Region.

In an interview on Connect FM’s Omanabapa morning show, Chief Superintendent Sorkpah indicated that the 54 dead cases were from the 354 road accidents occurred in the country within this year while 317 persons out of the 354 were also injured.

“The accidents included 224 commercial vehicles and 130 private vehicles.

“Out of the total number of deaths, 46 are males and 8 are females. 175 motorbikes were also involved,” he said

He revealed that most of these accidents are caused by reckless drivers.

“Most of the drivers have refused to listen to the numerous education we continue to provide. Most of them don’t comply with basic road safety regulations and that is why we have these numbers,” he added.

In the meantime, a total of 64 persons died in the same period last year.
