The Chief Executive Officer for the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong has backed directives by the Ghana Police to religious bodies, regarding 31st December Night prophesies.
The Ghana Police in a statement signed by SUPT.Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Public Affairs, has directed religious bodies to desist from prophesies that have the potential of causing harm, fear, and panic in the country.
According to the Police, prophesies of such nature, which are not backed by any evidence, could open them up to criminal and legal liabilities.
This statement has since been met with mixed reactions.
Whereas some people have welcomed the move, others fear the directive will stifle religious freedom and the prophetic mandate.
But Speaking to TV3news, the respected Minister of the Gospel, stated that religious excesses, which find expression in prophesies, must be controlled to safeguard the country.
He decried the abuse of religious right by some self-acclaimed prophets in the country, remarking that such trends could portend danger to Ghana’s peace and security.
He, however, cautioned the Ghana Police to exercise the highest form discretion in implementing the directive, in order not to be seen as undermining religious rights.
