Active COVID-19 cases now at 6,361

Ghana is currently experiencing a surge in active COVID-19 cases, days into the Christmas festivities.

The Ghana Health Service reports that as at 22nd December 2021, Ghana’s active cases stood at 6,361, a sharp increase in recent times.

The risk of heightened cases has been exacerbated by not only the festive activities associated with Christmas but also the highly contagious, Omicron variant.

The Ghana Health Services, as part of efforts to contain the spread of the Omicron Variant, has issued strict measures for travelers at the Kotoka Intentional Airport. This measures have since been revised.

In his 27th update on measures to contain the virus, President Akuffo Addo, also stressed the need for Ghanaians to adhere to the safety protocols, as a means to protect themselves against the savagery of the ever spreading COVID.

The President further extended the closure of the country’s land borders, among other measures to curtail the spread of the virus.

Despite these efforts and the declaration of December as Vaccination Month, the number of fully vaccinated Ghanaians is still below acceptable thresholds, a situation that has increased the number of COVID -19 cases.

Events associated with the Christmas festivities have also posed great challenge to efforts at observing some safety protocols.

In its public update, the Ghana Health Services advised Ghanaians to continue to observe the safety protocols, including Wearing a mask always; Washing hands regularly with soap under running water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; Practicing social distancing and Getting vaccinated immediately.
