Occupy Ghana wades into Controversies in Parliament

Pressure group, Occupy Ghana is calling on the Ghana Police to invite persons who engaged in the brawl in Parliament on Monday, December 20, 2021.

The Parliamentary sitting of December 20, 2021, was an eyesore, as some Majority Members and their colleagues in the Minority side slug it out in an open fisticuff.

The incident has since drawn condemnation from the public.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kyei Mensah Bonsu described the exchange as an embarrassment, blaming same on the absence of the Right Hon. Speaker Alban Bagbin.

In response to public outcry for the Police to act, the Ghana Police indicated that they could only step in upon the invitation of the Marshalls in Parliament.

But Speaking to CitiFM, Casely Hayford of Occupy Ghana remarked that certain provisions in the constitution gives the Police the powers to probe violence.

He stated that if the Police want to pursue the matter, they can notify the Speaker, to investigate certain actions of Parliamentarians which bothers on criminality.

‘‘There are procedures in place which the police can use to prosecute. They must have an appetite to investigate. If they don’t have an appetite, there is nothing anybody can do. If it is a crime, Parliament cannot say that it is a crime that affect our Chamber so nobody can prosecute it,’’ he remarked.

According to the Financial Analyst, if persons involved in such embarrassing actions are not prosecuted, the situation will not end.

‘‘If we do not prosecute, it becomes a norm,’’ he stated.
